The missionaries at the SIL orphanage had the same problems and emphasized how important it was for the missionary to give any gifts rather than the “rich” American visitors, and that gifts needed to be “won” as a prize or earned in exchange for some kind of labor. Perhaps the Hatians could earn the “gift” by cooking or cleaning, then use the time to further develop your relationship.
